THE VALUE OF RETINOLS
Let’s demystify retinols.
It offers proven anti-aging benefits.
WHAT IS RETINOL?
Too often the word retinol sends us into skin care confusion. Should I use it? What kind should I use? Why is it important?
Retinol is a Vitamin A derivative that speeds up cell turnover and boosts collagen production, both active anti-aging actions. The first retinoid for skin, Retin-A, was introduced in 1971 as a prescription acne treatment. Patients noticed that when using Retin-A their skin became softer and smoother.
Retinol is gentler than Retin-A and does not require a prescription. When used regularly, retinol has been found to:
- Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Smooth out uneven skin texture.
- Improve skin discoloration.
- Improve skin’s overall firmness.
- Reduce pore size.
HOW TO USE RETINOL
Important information to know.
If you have never used a retinol or have only used one intermittently, start low and slow. Retinols can cause temporary redness, flakiness, peeling and skin sensitivity. Gradually adding a retinol to your skin care regimen can help minimize these reactions. Learn how to apply retinols to your face by watching this video.
Maffi recommends using a moisturizer such as SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 or A.G.E. Interrupter which can help with any dryness.

RETINOL FACTS
Seeing results take time.
Retinols can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Applying an SPF 30 or higher every day will help prevent future sun damage. Be sure to use caution if you plan to have prolonged sun exposure. Retinols put your skin through a faster exfoliation process that can cause normal side effects like redness, sensitivity, flaking, and irritation as your skin acclimates. Even if your skin is no longer experiencing this phase, you are still at an increased risk of sunburn as new skin cells are reaching the surface.
It takes an average of 12 – 16 weeks of consistent retinol use to see notable changes in the skin so plan ahead and stick with the program! Schedule a consultation with one of the licensed medical aestheticians at Maffi Skin Clinic to help determine which retinol strength is best for your skin.
