When the signs of aging start to bother you, eyelid surgery can be a great option. With eyelid surgery you can address the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both. Upper eyelid surgery is quick, easy and can even be done in the office without general anesthesia. Lower eyelid surgery is a little more involved and will need to be done in the operating room.

With time, the upper eyelid skin gets heavy and can start to rest on the lash line. It may be difficult to apply makeup because of the excess skin. The goal of the surgery is to remove the fullness, revealing more of the upper eyelid (eyeshadow space), while maintaining an upper eyelid fold that is natural and youthful. Because most of the incision is concealed in the upper eyelid crease, when your eyes are open you will not be able to see it. Fortunately, the skin on our face heals extremely well, so even with the eyes shut, you will have a difficult time seeing the incision. Even if you don’t wear make-up, the incisions fade with time so that you will not be able to see them.

The lower eyelids have more going on and a little extra work must be done to improve their appearance. It is not just a matter of extra skin, as with the uppers.
Small natural fat pads located under the eyes may start to bulge with time. We typically refer to these as “bags” under the eyes. In addition, the lower eyelid muscle under the skin gets loose and the skin gets crinkled – both of which result in a loose, crepe-like look. If that were not enough, the tissue under the “bags” thins with time causing a hollowed out appearance.
To address these issues we need to do surgery to remove the fat pads and tighten the loose muscle, a laser treatment for the wrinkles and crinkles in the skin, and filler or fat grafting to fill in the hollow. Future blog posts will discuss fat grafting and laser treatment options.

There is not a lot of down time with eyelid surgery. Here are some general post-surgery tips:
- There may be some bruising and swelling for about a week.
- The stitches will be removed after one week.
- After stitches are removed, any remaining bruising can be covered with make-up.
- Most people don’t take the pain pills we prescribe, but they are available.
- No strenuous exercise and lifting anything over 10 lbs. for a few weeks.
We are all very active these days, and although the procedure may seem a little scary it’s very doable. Before you know it, you’ll be healed, back to work and exercising, all while looking and feeling great!
